Neither Springsteen nor his former girlfriends, including photographer Lynn Goldsmith (with Bruce in Jackson Hole, WY, 1979), have ever spoken much about their past relationships, giving him one of rock ’n’ roll’s most private personal lives.
But in 1984, he was still wrestling with the issue of his unattached lifestyle. “I don’t know if I’m a big family man. My family’s been my band. I’ve always been that way,” he said at the time. “I think when I was young, I did it intentionally, because I knew I only had sixty dollars that month, and I had to live on that sixty dollars, and I couldn’t get married or I couldn’t get involved at the time. And then it just became my way of life, you know? It really became my way of life … I’m just not really lookin’ to get married at this point. I’ve made a commitment to doin’ my job right now, and that’s basically what I do. Someday, I’d like to have the whole nine yards—the wife, the kids.”
Five and a half months later, he gave it a shot. After a quick courtship, he married actress and former model Julianne Phillips. It was May 13, 1985, the height of Bruce’s rock stardom; he’d just returned from the Australia/Japan leg of the Born in the U.S.A. tour. She’d joined him in Japan, and afterward they’d headed for Lake Oswego, Oregon, where she was raised and her parents still resided. When helicopters swarmed the reception two days later, Bruce reportedly said, “I do not believe or comprehend the world that I live in.” Almost two weeks later, Bruce and the E Street Band were back in New Jersey, filming the video for “Glory Days” in Hoboken with resident John Sayles directing at the legendary rock club Maxwell’s. Little Steven Van Zandt made a cameo, and so did Phillips. In October of that year, when the tour ended at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Bruce brought his new bride onstage during “Dancing in the Dark,” rather than his ritual of plucking a girl from the audience, in front of a crowd of 85,000. “I’d like to thank all my fans for coming out here,” he said, wrapping up the night. “This has been the greatest year of my life. I feel like I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
